5 Ways To Simplify Your Kitchen

Kitchens are one of the busiest rooms in the home and as such, can also become the most cluttered and chaotic. I’ve been trying out things to help keep it clean and simple, so here I share with you my 5 tips to keep a simple kitchen.

1. Clear the fridge. By removing almost everything from the surface of the fridge, it makes a much cleaner kitchen, both in the look of it and the actual surface. Eliminating cards, pictures, and calendars from the fridge can by done by hanging them somewhere else. For me, I chose to look inside the cupboards and that is where I place anything I need quick visual access to. You’re likely opening many cupboards frequently enough that it can also be a great place to put artwork or anything else that makes you smile.

This is the story of the time I lied to our four year old. No, not about the existence of Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny. I didn’t lie to her about how eating green vegetables will give her magic hair like Rapunzel or that if she isn’t asleep in five minutes the fairies won’t be able to come and sprinkle her with fairy dust (that is what I call regular dust in my house; our home is incredibly magical). I lied to her about dog clothes.

“It’s not you, it’s me.” It’s a cliche line used when breaking up with someone to take the onus for the end of the relationship. It’s also something I’m trying to live by every day.

“It’s not you”, the man who cuts me off in traffic–

“It’s me”, the one who has to let go of anger that surfaces.

“It’s not you”, friend or family member who didn’t react to news the way I wanted you to–

“it’s me”, taking ownership of my life choices regardless of how anyone else responds to them.

“It’s not you”, child who challenges my authority or brings me to my knees in exhaustion–

“it’s me”, a parent who is learning what it means to love unconditionally.

There is a proverb that says “as water reflects a face, so a man’s heart reflects the man.” What kind of reflection do you see today?

Sonic Speed Cupboard Clean

Just because I try to keep a simple home doesn’t mean I am immune to clutter. Organizing isn’t a one-time deal, it requires daily maintenance and sometimes a mini do-over if you haven’t been keeping it tidy. Watch as I remove, clean, and rearrange everything in my “catch-all” cupboard in the kitchen.

First step is to pick where you want to organize/simplify. Next step is to remove everything, yes, even if it means jumping up and down to see the back of the cupboard like I had to. Then it’s time to wipe down the shelves. Then I went through the items and decided if there was anything that needed to be moved to another location or thrown out. I didn’t have much to remove because I had already done a purge of the cupboard once.

After that comes what I call the “fun”. Finding a place to put things back. Since the last system obviously wasn’t working for me (otherwise I would have maintained it better) I decided to try to put things back differently the second time. I put things I rarely use (once a week or less) on the top shelf, things that are used but not necessarily daily on the middle shelf, and my daily-use or things I need quick access to on the first shelf. In case you don’t know me personally, or haven’t yet been overwhelmed by my fitness analogies, I like to work out. In fact, for the last few months it’s been something that I really look forward to doing. When days are tough or frustrating, I know that once I get under the weight of a heavy bar and push myself hard physically, I will feel so much better. Exercising frequently brings many great rewards, both physically and psychologically, but one unforeseen side effect was how scratched up my wedding rings would get from the weights.

Christmastime is here again. Long gone are the visions of sugarplums dancing in my head. They’ve been replaced with decorating, party planning and shopping for gifts. I’ll admit it, sometimes I begin to feel more like a scrooge than a santa with all of the demands being placed on me around this season. But wait a minute, just who is placing these demands on me, or is it all self-inflicted? This is just one of the questions going through my mind this year.

I’m a mom of two young kids (in case my “ponytail as a hairstyle” didn’t give it away yet) so “I’m bored” are two words I haven’t said in a long time. Whether it’s tidying up the toys, folding laundry, or a myriad of other jobs, there is always something that needs to get done.

Can you relate? I’m sure you can. No matter your season of life there is always something that needs cleaning, work that needs to be accomplished, and plans to prepare for.

Lately though I’ve been practicing being unproductive. It is taking active un-learning to stop thinking about the next thing that needs to get done long enough to be still and enjoy the moment. Sometimes I do it for 30 seconds while I am drinking my first morning sip of freshly brewed coffee. Other times I try and sit quietly for 5 minutes, this is about as long I can tolerate until the urge to get up and do something kicks in.

There is a fear of falling behind that permeates our decisions. Our work continues to mount as we don’t complete it. We also feel that we are the most capable and that if we didn’t act, nothing would get done. There is an old saying that goes: “the graveyards are full of indispensable people”. It is a telling, albeit somewhat morbid, statement that life goes on, with or without us.

So what value is there in stopping, then, if it risks us falling behind? Here are three observations from my own experience with being purposefully unproductive.

As someone who enjoys fitness and working out, few things make me cringe as much as someone doing an exercise with poor form. Whether it is a misaligned spine or crooked knees, my instinct is to want to correct them so that they will avoid injury and also find more success in their training.

All instructors understand the importance of teaching the proper way to do things, and the impact of correcting mistakes early on. As a mom I want to have the same approach when it comes to instructing and raising my children. If I want them to learn how respond to stress with patience and a calm reaction, how does flying off the handle contradict the message I’m hoping to teach?
