I have been asking myself one question lately. What are the many pleasures of having kids?

Foolish people tend to focus on the negative even when everything is going well. Others are mostly positive… well, at least when things are going well! But unfortunately most of us tend to focus on the difficulties, the sadness, the wrongs that have been done to us.

When you expect your first child, you get excited, you almost cannot wait for that precious day when you’ll hold that new life in your arms. You know the difficulties that will come with this new born and despite of this you focus on the positive and get extreme joy out of these thoughts.

Couple kids later, you’re in your kitchen trying to accomplish many small tasks that seemed so easily and quickly done in the past. Your kids are crying and they’re not the only ones. You feel overwhelmed and alone. You think of all that you have to do, everything seems so big. Stop right there, shake your body, move around and then continue reading.

We have two children under the age five so serene isn’t a word that would describe our home very often.

Kids are loud and living with them can be chaotic.

Tantrums.

Tears.

Tempers.

They all abound.

But over the last couple of years I have found one thing that very rarely fails to deliver.

Mornings with kids are tough. Especially when one of your kids isn’t a morning person and she has to be on the bus to school for 7:40am. Last week was particularly difficult. Every morning since Monday, the very first words out of our daughter’t mouth were: “Is it the fin-de-semaine [weekend] yet?” With which I had to reply with a sympathetic, “No, sweetie. It’s Monday” and again with each day of the week thereafter.

Thursday night, out of the earshot of the kids, JF and I said that we would keep her home Friday so that she could get some rest and then we could all sleep in (7am, lets be realistic here). So, we settle in Thursday night hoping for a long, restful sleep.

Go Ahead, Get Dirty!

Go Ahead, Get Dirty!

Go Ahead, Get Dirty!Spring is on its way where we live and with the warmer sunshine-filled days comes the melting of snow. And we have a LOT of snow. What happens when giant banks of snow dissolve into water? Puddles. Around our neighbourhood they tend to resemble miniature lakes, where you’re liable to get wet up to your knees. Is there anything more satisfying to a child than coming across a giant puddle, and running through it with reckless abandon?

5 Ways to Raise Good Kids

5 Ways to Raise Good Kids

Smiling Little Goats by nuchylee / freedigitalphotos.net

I don’t know a parent out there who doesn’t want good kids. The problem is, we all have different ideas of what “good” looks like. For some it means kids who behave well in public, while for others it means kids who will be successful in school, or will grow up to have a lucrative career. For us, it means kids who love God and love others; who know who they are and aren’t afraid to live it and who desire to have a positive impact in the world. Sounds pretty lofty, doesn’t it? Perhaps, but we believe it is achievable, especially with consistent practice of these five concepts.

Power Of The Ring

Power Of The Ring

Power Of The Ring

By Todd Ginther.

I was looking at my wedding band the other day and realized that I have become so accustomed to wearing it that I rarely look at it or even notice it anymore, it feels like it’s a part of me. On one hand, it shows that I’ve been married for awhile and that through the joy and hardships of life, Cheryl and I are a part of each other. On the other hand, I think I’m not taking full advantage of the power of the ring!

I have a simple technique that will help you to use your wedding ring in a new way; it will help you to see the best in your spouse.

How long have I been a minimalist? Longer than some of you but definitely shorter than Joshua Becker! Does this kind of answer satisfy you? Probably not. And yet, we use it all the time.

How’s the weather? It’s colder than yesterday. Do you like the soup? It’s better than the last batch. Wasn’t that a great movie? I guess, but I didn’t like it as much as the first two in the series.

Why then, with these kind of answers failing to satisfy us, do we insist on comparing?

As a Canadian living in a cold and snowy city, one of my slogans is “I can’t always run but I can shovel!” Actually I don’t mind shovelling snow. I put some Christmas music on and go out enjoy the fresh air and the workout.

Not too long ago was the first big storm of the season here in Ottawa. At this time of year, shovelling is not just a sport, it’s an intense planning activity! See, I have a small lawn and long driveway which means I need to carefully place the snow in a way that will allow me to stack the snow all winter long without it crumbling down and burying me. 😉
