Are you comfortable? Right now? If you’re standing you probably wish you could be sitting. If you’re sitting you’d probably prefer to be reclining. And if you’re reclined? Why not take a nap.

We all strive for comfort.

Whether it’s in the clothes we wear, the way we plan our finances, or the friends we choose to be around, our decisions are often made with our own comfort in mind. In his book, The Mindfulness Solution, professor of psychology Ronald D Seigel says that we are addicted to seeking pleasure, so much that we are unable “to just be”.

Perhaps she was behind schedule to get to work. An important meeting. Some paperwork she was behind on. Perhaps she was rushing to get to school, to study for a test or do final edits on a paper. She never thought that rushing would end her life. None of us do, and yet it is not the first time that speeding ahead has ended in disaster.

I have to say I’m guilty of some of those but I’m trying to change.

Stand Up for Yourself!

About two years ago I decided to stand up for myself and lose the office chair. In the past, I had some back problems and my back tends to be weak. So I asked myself when is my posture at its worst? The answer is when I sit for hours developing software. I know I should take several breaks, look away from the screen, walk around and stretch. But honestly, did you ever see a developer do that consistently? Not me. We tend, or at least, I tend to get so focused on my tasks that I forget about these great habits.
