Worst Case Scenario

Imagine this, you come home from a wonderful family vacation where you have been refreshed and energized, making memories with loved ones, and as you pull up to your driveway you see that your home has been the victim of a fire, causing all of your possessions to be destroyed.  After you have been able to process the trauma of the fire, what are you most upset about losing?  Are those 35 tupperware containers that barely fit in the cupboard among your most treasured things?  I hope that nobody ever experiences the pain of a house fire, and I don’t use the example lightly, but rather to shed light on the disproportionate amount of emphasis we place on “stuff”.

Running Stride

Finding Your Stride

Running Stride

I was out for a run the other day and I just couldn’t seem to find my stride. I was visiting family so my route was on new terrain, I was wearing borrowed earbuds that refused to stay put and to top it all off, it was raining. I’ve been running long enough that running in the rain isn’t a huge deterrent, but it certainly doesn’t make for as pleasurable of a run. About halfway through the run I gave up on the earbuds and stuffed them into my pocket, deciding instead to let my heavy breathing and the splashing of the rain be my music (doesn’t quite have the oomph of my dance mix but it is more peaceful). I was trying to stay positive but was fighting thoughts like “I should have stayed in” and “this is going to be a poor run”. I was rounding the corner to turn back to my parents house when I saw another woman running towards me, just as soaked as I was at that point. She was on the opposite side of the road but as we approached each other I checked for cars and crossed towards her. I gave her a high five and said “way to go! Keep running!” and she smiled, high-fived back and said “you too!”. I finished my run with a smile on my face and it left a great impression on my soul as well.

Woman shopping

I’m going to tell you something that might come as a surprise to some and a relief for others: being a minimalist doesn’t mean never going shopping again. We live in a world of extremes that wants to categorize things into “good” or “bad” but buying things isn’t the issue here. The questions behind the purchases are what matter—the what, how much, and, more importantly, why are we buying things. Here are 5 pre-purchase questions to help you live a simpler lifestyle.

Bird signing

How to Create a Positive Perspective

Bird signing

This morning as I was out walking my dog at 6am I heard a bird giving its morning wake-up call in a tree in front of my neighbours open window. At first I thought about how annoyed I would be if I were that person trying to sleep and being awoken by a noisy bird (for I have been that person!). My next thought though was the complete opposite: “What,” I imagined, “if that person specifically left their window open so that they could be woken up to the sound of birds singing?”. Even though it is not my ideal way to be awoken from slumber (the smell of coffee brewing would do it for me, if anyone is taking notes) it does not mean that someone else does not enjoy what I might consider to be bothersome. What if we changed our thinking to view the ‘noisy birds’ in our lives as beautiful music to our ears?

Stand Up for Yourself!

Stand Up for Yourself!

Stand Up for Yourself!

About two years ago I decided to stand up for myself and lose the office chair. In the past, I had some back problems and my back tends to be weak. So I asked myself when is my posture at its worst? The answer is when I sit for hours developing software. I know I should take several breaks, look away from the screen, walk around and stretch. But honestly, did you ever see a developer do that consistently? Not me. We tend, or at least, I tend to get so focused on my tasks that I forget about these great habits.
